MEANING   OF   PATOLA

PATOLA is one kind of silk cloth.

MEANING OF DOUBLE IKAT - A process of coloring and developing design in Patola on warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) both the sides. Due to DOUBLE IKAT weaving colors being so fast and hard on Patola that it never fades. There is a proverb for Patan na Patola.

PROVERB

"PADI PATOLE BHAT, FATE PAN FITE NAHI"
Means : 'The design laid down in patola shall never fade even if the cloth may be torn.

From 700 A.D'patt' is used to describe silk cloth, hence the word PATOLA comes from 'patt' (silk cloth). Mr. K. K. Shashtri, one of the greatest pandits of Gujarat, gives his opinion that PATOLA is deformed from Sanskrit word 'pattkalam'.

Mahakavi kalidas used 'patrorna' and 'chinankush' words in his lyrics Malvikagnimitra and Shakuntal respectively.

In Tamil and Malayalam language the word 'patt' is used for silk cloth.

Upon a time 'chinapatt' is very popular in PATAN.

Cloth imported from china in BD 4th is known as 'chinpatt' and 'chinankush'.

Salvi cast's Patola were mentioned in 2000 year old Jain religious book 'Kalpsutra'.

Also it was described in Premanand's 'Kuvarbai's Mameru' in 17th century. That says, this Patola of Patan's handicraft is 2000 years old.
